Mice & Rats

What are rodents?

Rodents are small mammals with teeth that grow continuously, which is why they constantly chew on wood, plastic, wires, and more to keep their teeth worn down. Common rodents in the Idaho and Eastern Washington region include house mice, voles, rats, and squirrels.

On local properties—especially in areas like Lewiston, Coeur d’Alene, Spokane, and surrounding towns—house mice and voles are the most common rodent intruders.

House mice

House mice are small, typically ranging from just over 2 inches to around 4 inches long, not including their tails (which are usually just as long). They’re gray or light brown with cream-colored bellies, and are known for their pointed noses and large ears. They nest in walls, attics, garages, and crawlspaces—anywhere warm and near food.

VOles

Voles are ground-dwelling rodents that are slightly larger than house mice and often mistaken for them. Unlike mice, voles have shorter tails, rounder snouts, and smaller ears. They’re known for damaging lawns and gardens by tunneling through soil and chewing plant roots. You’ll often spot vole trails in grassy areas or notice soft spots in the ground.

Are rodents dangerous?

Yes—rodents are dangerous for multiple reasons. They can carry diseases such as salmonella and hantavirus, and they also spread parasites like fleas and ticks, which can contribute to illnesses like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Rodents don’t just spread disease—they also cause costly damage. Their constant gnawing can ruin insulation, chew through wires (creating fire hazards), and damage plumbing. A small infestation can quickly turn into a major problem if not addressed.

Why do I have a rodent problem?

Rodents are most likely to invade during the colder months—especially in fall and winter—when outdoor food and shelter become harder to find. In cities like Lewiston, Coeur d’Alene, Spokane, and surrounding areas, we often see infestations begin when mice or voles squeeze through gaps the size of a dime.

They’re excellent climbers and chewers, and if they can’t find an opening, they’ll make one. Once inside, they look for food, warmth, and a safe place to nest—turning your home into theirs.

Where will I find rodents?
Rodents tend to hide in quiet, dark areas close to food and moisture. Inside homes and businesses, we commonly find them:
  • Inside attics and wall voids
  • Behind kitchen appliances or inside cabinets
  • In crawlspaces, basements, or garages
  • Near water heaters or laundry machines
Look for signs like droppings, chewing marks, nesting material, or scratching sounds at night.
